Bombay S Jayashri is a leading Carnatic music vocalist. She has also recorded songs as a playback singer in South Indian films. She has many albums to her credit, released as cassettes and CDsBombay Jayashri.


Early life

Jayashri was born to N N Subramaniam and Seetha, who groomed her in Carnatic music in her initial years. Her initiation into music was under her father's guidance at the age of four. Later Jayashri learned under the tutelage of T R Balamani Ammal of Bombay. She was into concert performances in her teens. In 1989, she enrolled herself as a disciple of the legend Lalgudi G Jayaraman. Since 1989, she has been under the guidance and tutelage of the renowned violin maestro.

She is also a student of veena, under G N Dhandapani Iyer.

She along with T.M.Krishna feature in the first ever Carnatic concert movie, titled, Margazhi Raagam. The movie has received rave reviews from all quarters.


Jayashri has performed in all the major institutions, festivals and sabhas in India and has won rich acclaim from critics and rasikas. Bombay Jayashri is an ‘A’ grade artiste of All India Radio and is a regular performer on Doordarshan. She has released several cassettes and CDs on major labels, like HMV, Sangeetha and Inreco and is a popular favourite.

Jayashri is a commerce graduate from Bombay University. While at university, she collected an impressive array of awards and titles in the fields of music, dance and dramatics. She also received a Diploma in Music from the Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya.


Bombay Jayashree has also worked with noted Chennai film composers and sung several songs for Tamil films, with A. R. Rahman, for songs like "Narumugaiye" from the Mani Ratnam-film Iruvar (1997), Yuvan Shankar Raja, for songs like "Theenda Theenda" from Thulluvadho Ilamai (2001) and "Malargale" from Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan (2004), Harris Jayaraj, for songs like "Vaseegara" from Minnale (2001), "Suttum Vizhi Chudare" from Ghajini (2005) and "Partha Mudhal Naalae" from Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006), and with Ouseppachan (Malayalam), for the song "Pranaya Sandhya oru " from award winning Ore Kadal (2007) and also the widely famous Hindi song "Zara Zara" from Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein (2001).

She has also featured in the Carnatic concert movie, Margazhi Raagam along with T.M. Krishna in 2008. She has done the song 'siru thoduthalile' in tamil movie laadam


She was the recipient of the first award given by CMANA to the best artiste under 25 years of age. She was awarded the title of Yuva Kala Bharathi ("young poet of the fine arts") by Bharat Kalachar in the year 1992.

She is the recipient of several awards from reputed institutions like The Music Academy, Shanmukhananda Sabha (Bombay), Krishna Gana Sabha (Madras) and Indian Fine Arts (Madras).
